Health care is being delivered by health care professionals (GPs, specialists, nurses, etc) who often work together in provider organizations such as health centres and hospitals. ECORYS has been involved in many projects advising on improving the capacity of providers when they consider expanding their services or renewing their (technological) capacities through medical equipment etc. Feasibility studies, due diligence of proposals for hospital investments, are one of the key areas ECORYS is active. Health care professions are often heavily regulated which can have a large impact on the availability of skilled staff. In Europe, the lack of good quality professionals is putting pressure on labour markets in the health care sector. Internationally, the World Health Organization speaks of a global crisis for health professionals, putting poor countries in a difficult position as a result of the migration of professionals to industrialized countries. The regulation and education of health care professionals and the development of health care labour markets are a specific topic of interest to the advisory work of ECORYS. On the one hand health care belongs to a group of most technologically advanced industries in the world, with stunning examples of research and innovation in treatment capacities. On the other hand the health care sector is a sector which makes relatively low use of the opportunities of new technologies (e.g. ICT) and organizational and management innovations. The gradual transformation to more demand-oriented health care and a focus on efficiency in operations is pushing the innovation issue in the sector to the forefront. Examples of our project experience can be found under the heading 'Projects' (right of this text) and in our web project database. More information Arthur ten Have Wija Oortwijn |
