Knowledge Society

Picture of IT trainingThe notion 'knowledge society' or 'knowledge economy' is getting more and more attention. But what exactly is a knowledge society? We describe it as "a society where knowledge is a central source of competitiveness, and where science, research, technology and innovation play key roles in knowledge creation. Modern ICT aids like computers and the internet are used to generate, share and apply knowledge."

Ecorys has been active in the field of the knowledge society for years, providing research and consultancy services at European, national, regional and local levels. At the European level, the Lisbon Strategy continues to be the starting point for much research on the knowledge economy. Subjects of research include the role of ICT and other new technologies in economic growth and the differences between nations when it comes to adapting to these new technologies and turning them into productive means to economic and socials ends. Analysis of 'knowledge societies' also includes determining knowledge hot spots; places and institutions of special importance to the building of knowledge and expertise. Research can help identifying these hotspots, consultancy can aid in determining economic and social value and opportunities.

Outside the EU, notably in New Member States, ICT and other new technologies offer powerful means for modernization and process innovation. The knowledge economy shows a rather different face in these countries. Structural differences that exist between economies in Eastern and Western Europe translate into different barriers and opportunities in the emerging knowledge economy.

The knowledge society is a complex phenomenon with many aspects. For years, Ecorys has been involved in helping nations and regions optimising means and achieving goals related to the knowledge society.
