5 August 2010 – Ecorys is currently working on two projects for the European Commission that are part of the preparations for the new post-2010 EU biodiversity strategy. Together with partner Alterra, Ecorys is carrying out an analysis of the potential policy options to be included in the new EU biodiversity strategy. The second project focuses on assessing the requirements and related costs and benefits of the monitoring schemes needed for evaluating progress towards the 2020 biodiversity target.

In its conclusions of 15 March, the Environment Council has agreed a new vision and headline target for biodiversity in the EU for the period beyond 2010, when the current target expires. This target will underpin the new EU biodiversity strategy to be developed this year, which is also the International Year of Biodiversity as declared by the United Nations.

Ecorys has been active in the field of biodiversity for some years and has worked on several EU biodiversity studies. The two current projects are part of the larger aim of the EU to finalise their new post-2010 biodiversity policy.
