This project aimed to assist Estonia in the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) by installing and making “operational nutrient pollution” related models and methodologies. These were used for the further development of river basin management plans in Estonia.

The project was done at two levels, the national level and the regional level. At the national level the emphasize was placed on institutional conditions for model application. At the regional level, a pilot basin was chosen where a River Basin Management Plan was made and models were tested in practice. In this pilot, special attention was put on modelling the pressures and impacts from both point and non point sources (especially nutrients). Training has been provided through workshops for approximately 20 experts and by “hands-on” training at a regional level. The aim of this training was to increase Estonia’s capacity in working with models and therewith fulfilling the requirements of the WFD.
