Period: 2004-2007

The project is to improve the availability of information, to ease communication and enhance the capacity for implementing EU water legislation in Slovenia. More specifically, the project addressed the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive. The project served to test the implementation of both Directives in a pilot area: the Krka river basin district.

ECORYS was responsible for the implementation of phase 1 of the project. ECORYS has applied various pieces of EU guidance to the RBD, among which the WATECO guidance on economic analysis, guidance on public participation and on the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Moreover, in the course of this project ECORYS has provided the authorities with a Decision Support System for implementation of WFD. Also, an organisational scheme for river basin management has been established on the basis of which information flows, consultation and participation have been encouraged. The River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) offers a thorough characterization of the Krka sub-basin and the selection of measures involved: cost-effectiveness analysis; the evaluation of environmental costs; and cost-benefit analyses for assessing disproportionate costs.
