The EU-enlargement and the shift in EU-policy favouring the second pillar of the CAP increases the attention for the development of rural areas throughout the EU. ECORYS is very much involved in this development.

For the 2007-2013 period, rural development in the EU is structured along three axes: a more competitive agricultural sector, land use management and wider rural development. The bottom-up approach through the Leader initiative is the fourth axis. ECORYS provides expertise and support on all these topics, covering all the stages of the program-cycle like programming, indicator development, project selection, monitoring and evaluation. ECORYS was involved in several major projects regarding rural development in most of the EU-25 and the candidate countries.
