Transport of goods PDF Print E-mail

Picture of freight transport

The goods transport sector is expanding faster than the economy itself. Past years the demand for the transport of goods increased explosively. This is largely due to the globalisation of trade and production. The various modes of transport (road, waterways, rail, air and sea) have responded to increasing demand in different ways. In the Netherlands inland shipping and road transport have grown the fastest. At the same time there is greater competition within the sector. The rail freight market is going through big changes particularly as the result of liberalisation.

With regard to goods transport the various levels of government must be mindful of the balance between economic and social interests when developing policy. A common dilemma faced by policy makers is: “how can we promote efficiency in the goods transport sector and improve the accessibility of cities within the framework of safety, environmental quality and sustainability.

For businesses, improvements to logistics are of paramount importance. A shipper’s competitiveness is determined to a large degree by the efficiency of his logistical operation. Furthermore transport companies’ profit margins are under constant pressure.

ECORYS has extensive experience dealing with a wide range of issues concerning goods transport at the regional, national and international levels. For example we provide insight into the social and economic effects of the goods transport sector and we measure the impact of policy instruments on the sector itself. Our expertise, creativity and scientific approach are translated into concrete practical advice. We are knowledgeable about all modes of transport and we advise both government and the private sector.
